FLEXIBLE. AMBITIOUS. REWARDING.

SSE is the UK and Ireland’s clean energy champion. We’re building the world’s largest offshore wind farm, delivering 1000s of new jobs, and developing enough renewable energy projects to power 2 in 3 UK homes.

How are we doing it? People power.

Working with us means joining a team of over 12,000 dedicated people who genuinely care. Whether we’re fixing power lines, helping customers, or inventing the energy technologies of tomorrow, we work as a team, look out for one other, and keep each other safe.

The way SSE supports, engages, and includes its people has become more crucial than ever, if it is to attract and retain the diverse workforce required to deliver net zero. SSE is working towards becoming an employer of choice for all, ensuring every employee in the business understands the importance of diversity, creating a work environment that allows everybody to thrive, and providing support and a sense of belonging for everyone.

SSE’s inclusion and diversity strategy focuses on four main areas: Ambition; Education and Development; Inclusive Processes; and Employee Voice. It focuses on inclusion for all by listening to underrepresented groups and their unique experiences, to help shape and influence the actions needed to drive positive change across all levels of the business.

Choose a career with SSE, the UK and Ireland's green energy champion.Right now, there’s a gap in female talent in business leadership. Women are underrepresented in senior roles in just about every industry, particularly in the energy sector.

That’s why we’re working to create a culture where equality, fairness and diversity are not just intentions but actions. Because we know that brilliant leadership requires diverse perspectives, experiences and skills. That means recognising that everyone has different needs and aspirations, and that there can be many changes in the course of a career.

What's it really like here? We’re looking for people who have the talent and skills to help us create cleaner energy and a better environment for our children and grandchildren. We need purpose-driven people who want to make a difference. In return, we will support your career with development opportunities, giving you the tools to reach your goals while empowering you to maintain a healthy work life balance.

Powerful Women at SSE: LaméMy name is Lamé; I am from Benin-City, Nigeria, in West Africa. I studied Economics & Statistics at the University of Benin for my undergrad and Energy and Environmental Management and Economics for my Master’s degree at the ENI Corporate University in Milan, Italy. I also hold an MBA from Imperial College London, UK.

I started my career with ENI as a Petroleum Economist for several years in Nigeria and Italy before moving to the UK to work with energy organisations like Sterling Energy Plc (now Afentra) and E.ON Ruhrgas (now part of Harbour). After five years as Head of Economics at E.ON, I moved to a consulting role with Baker Hughes, which took me to Houston, Texas, as the Economics Manager for the Americas.

Powerful Women at SSE: HeatherI’m Heather – I joined SSE from a career at HM Naval Base. Faslane, starting as an apprentice, working in hands on technical roles before moving into management. There were a few changes there, so I decided to see what other opportunities were available. I was attracted to SSE through reputation, and I was aware of their great safety practices – and I really wanted to work with a company with a Scottish HQ, as I love travelling and visiting in Scotland.

Faslane was a great opportunity for me to get into the engineering world.  When I was ready to leave school, I knew I wanted to do something different. I didn't want to work in stereotypical female jobs. I had no interest in working in a shop or a nurse or anything like that. One thing I was very conscious of was that I wanted a job rather than going to university.

Powerful Women at SSE: ElianePart of that was an exchange with Glasgow University, where I went on to do a Masters in Water Resource Management, then my PhD in Civil Engineering. I’ve had an interesting route to SSE, first joining a water company in England where I worked for eight years, finishing in business planning and  strategy, which I wanted to specialise in, so moved to a role there in Network Rail.

I spent ten years there, the last five as Director of Asset Management. It was time for a change from rail, so, I went back to water as Water Director in the north of England for two years, then was approached about a role at SSE.  I didn’t know that much about SSE before I joined, but I knew I wanted to continue working for a large infrastructure company while also contributing more directly to achieving  Net Zero.

Powerful Women at SSE: LouiseI’m Louise, and I’ve been in my new role in EPM for over a year now as the main business partner for all of our energy businesses (Renewables, Thermal, Enterprise and Energy Customer Solutions). Basically I started at the bottom and worked up, with some interesting career moves along the way.

When I left school I did a degree in Pure Mathematics mainly as I was good at it. At Uni I had a job as manager of a bar here in Glasgow – probably one of my most favourite jobs ever. However, with the end of my degree I knew I had to use it to the good, so took an entry level role as an analyst in an energy company crunching numbers and producing forecasts and model building.

Powerful Women at SSE: EuniceI’m Eunice, and in my 10 years at SSE I have worked in a few different roles and seen some huge changes.

I can see vast differences in the business over my time – we are certainly going in the right direction. I left school without going to college or university as I wanted to start earning. My career starting in banking. I undertook banking exams and was at one point the youngest person to head up a department there. Then I decided to see the world and took a year off to travel. I loved seeing different cultures and different ways of doing things, it was certainly worth the year out as it gave me a new perspective.

Powerful Women at SSE: ChristiannaI’m Christianna and joined SSE in 2007 as a Sales Process Coordinator in our Perth office. It was a bit of a roundabout way to get to SSE – I studied Marketing at Edinburgh University and from there joined a networking company. It was great fun and I actually moved up to Perth with them. It was quite a small company, and I started to look for opportunities and found one at SSE.

Within six months of moving to SSE I had changed role to join a new research team that was looking into the future. We basically became an internal consultancy looking at energy issues from an SSE perspective. One of the first projects I worked on was on electric vehicles. At that time there were no production EVs, and Tesla was just a concept.
